Tips from Kay Knapp

  1. How much does it cost to fire?
That depends on: your kiln, your local electricity rate, and how long you fire. Kilns are rated in kilowatts (KWs); yours is probably between 1.5 and 8 KWs. You can find your electricity rate on your bill expressed in dollars per kw/hour (typically $0.07 to $0.11). The calculation is simple: How long you fire in hours x your kiln’s KW rating x your electricity rate. Example: 5 hours x 3 KW x $0.09/KW/hour = $1.35.
